The approval of over €16 million in funding for 25 rural water projects across County Donegal has been welcomed.
However Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher said it was an ‘outrage’ that there was no allocation for Letterbrick, in the Glenfin Gaeltacht.
The funding, sanctioned under the Multi-Annual Rural Water Programme, will support improvements in water quality, supply security, and environmental sustainability for rural communities throughout Donegal. The approved projects include upgrades and taking in charge of schemes.
“This funding is a critical lifeline for many rural communities who have long needed support in maintaining and upgrading their water services,” Deputy Gallagher said.
“These projects will not only enhance public health and environmental standards but also help sustain the viability of rural living in County Donegal.”
However, he said he was ‘outraged’ at the omission of Letterbrick.
“While welcoming this announcement I am outraged that Letterbrick community water scheme is not included in this tranche,” he said.
“Donegal County Council submitted the further information requested by the Department and I cannot understand why this scheme was not included. I have contacted Minister O’Sullivan, who has delegated authority for group water and has agreed to meet with a delegation regarding Letterbrick.
“I will endeavour, because of the importance of providing water to 55 dwelling houses, to arrange this meeting at the earliest possible date. We must deliver clean, reliable water to rural communities that have waited far too long”.
Deputy Gallagher commended Donegal County who submitted strong applications and acknowledged the ongoing partnership between government and local authorities in delivering essential rural services.
Donegal County Council will access each application that is funded and decide on the best way to deliver each project.
