Donegal County Council is one of several local authorities in Ireland that has been found to be using a controversial Chinese surveillance camera system – one that is banned in several countries due to major privacy concerns.
The Journal are reporting today that Donegal’s local authority is amongst several local authority and governmental bodies in Ireland that are utilising Hikvision camera systems.
These controversial systems have been banned from use at “sensitive government sites” by a number of countries including the US, the UK and Australia, due to concerns that they pose a massive privacy threat.
Amongst the groups opposed to their use in Ireland are the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, who have cited concerns regarding potential privacy, data security, and human rights violations.
The Public Services Centre in Letterkenny was one of the locations that The Journal identified in their report as currently having Hikvision systems installed.
