A new lighting system has been unveiled at the iconic Polestar Art Monument at the Port Bridge Roundabout in Letterkenny – just in time to celebrate Donegal’s appearance in the All-Ireland Final.
The Polestar, created by artist Locky Morris and unveiled in 2006, has become one of County Donegal’s most recognisable landmarks.
Over the years, Donegal County Council has received numerous requests from community groups and organisations to light the monument in different colours for various events and celebrations.
Thanks to funding from the Minor Tourism Fund a new lighting system now allows the Polestar to be illuminated in white by default, with the capability to display a range of colours on request to mark specific occasions.

Details on how charities and organisations can request specific colours at particular times will be released at a later date.
The project was completed by O’Hara Harrison Electrical Contractors in partnership with Donegal County Council. The lighting system was officially switched on for the first time last night, by the Mayor of the Letterkenny-Milford MD, Cllr Ciaran Brogan, joined by fellow elected representatives.
To mark the occasion—and in honour of Donegal’s appearance in the All-Ireland Final—the Polestar is currently lit in green and gold.
Speaking at the switch-on, Mayor of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, Cllr Brogan said “Our message is simple: we’re delighted to show our support by lighting up the Polestar in Donegal’s colours of green and gold, and to wish Jim McGuinness and the county team every success in Sunday’s All Ireland Final.
“I thank our team in Donegal County Council, my fellow Elected Members and our local Contractors O’Hara Harrison Electrical for making this possible.”
