Fine Gael’s Joe McHugh TD has confirmed that Minister for Environment Phil Hogan TD has given sanction for the funding.

Deputy McHugh said “I have received confirmation from Phil Hogan TD, Minister for Environment, Community & Local Government that he has decided to give sanction for funding of €384,906.25 to be approved by Inishowen Development Partnership for the building of a Community and Heritage Centre in Drumfries.

“The new Community and Heritage Centre has a total project cost of €584,788.32. This will be a very important resource for the local community and for Inishowen. Minister Hogan has now referred project to Inishowen Development Partnership, for final funding approval.

“I compliment Drumfries Community Centre Association for its work over a long number of years in driving this project.”

Announcing the funding Minister Hogan “This project will be of immense benefit to Drumfries and its surrounding areas, with its total project costs of €584,788.32. I know it will improve the quality of life and will strengthen the social and economic fabric for all the areas inhabitants.”

The LEADER elements of the Programme offer many challenges and opportunities in terms of addressing the needs of improving the quality of life in rural areas and providing greater opportunities for farm diversification.

It is focused on the development of micro-enterprises, rural services, rural recreation and rural tourism. It is hoped that, by focusing on these services, the Programme will lead to sustainable development, which in turn will ensure prosperity for the rural areas.

The Minister added „the project will now go back to the Board of Inishowen Development Partnership for the final approval on the project. This is in line with the EU’s bottom-up approach to rural development.
