Ballyliffin Golf Club Results By Phelim Davenport

The main event on the Ballyliffin calendar last week was the Irish Amateur Close Championship. Played over 5 days with 2 being qualifying days and then 3 days of matchplay. The semi-finals and final was played on Saturday. After 5 cracking days of golf and a hard fought final between 2 international teammates Alex Gleeson from the Castle Club won 2 n 1 over John Ross Galbraith from Whithead. The both had stood shoulder to shoulder on the Irish Team that had won the Home Internationals in Scotland the weekend before.

Sometimes you look at a scorecard in disbelief and the Saturday Confined provided one of those moments. Nine birdies six pars and three bogies gave Brendan Devlin[1] a round of 65 and 43 Stableford pts. Brendan didn’t have much luck during the Irish Close but by God he made up for it on Saturday. Covering the last 6 holes in 5 under par is the stuff of every golfers dreams. Class Brendan. Spare a thought for Gary Mc Geoghegan[5] who shot a 1 under par round to give him 42pts but only 2nd. Gary only arrived back from his wedding in Las Vegas last week but he obviously saved a bit of his energy for the golf. 3rd place went to another low man Oscar Mailey[6] with 38pts. John K Farren[19] took 4th with 38pts also. The Gross went to Jason Mc Intyre[4] with 33 gross pts.

The Sunday Anniversary Open was played off the back tees as usual. A man whose handicap has gone amazingly to 17 Neil Grant had 38pts to win from Jim Monagle[11] with 36pts. In 3rd spot was serial prizewinner Ryan Doherty[5] with 35pts. Nicky Mc Cusker[17] took 4th also with 35pts. Married life is working wonders for Gary Mc Geoghegan[4] he took the Gross with 28 gross pts.

Just wishing our President Frank Harkin all the best on his big day next Saturday. A few verses of his party piece The Tractor will be a must.
