December 20, 2016

A Buncrana transport company has been fined €500 for having an overloaded lorry.

Kevin Cullen Transport had a case against them heard at Letterkenny District Court.

The court heard that driver Hillary Cullen was stopped by Gardai at Carrickadawson, Raphoe on December 22nd last year.

The lorry was severely overloaded in that it had a weight of 5,120 kilos on board when the maximum weight it should have had was 3,500, an overweight of 1,620 kilos.

Solicitor Ciaran MacLochlainn told the court that it was the Christmas period and the driver was trying to take on as big a load of agricultural feed as possible to get him over the holiday period.

He said the company had been trading for more than 30 years and had an excellent reputation.

Judge Paul Kelly fined the company, of Cockhill Road, Buncrana, a total of €500 and gave the driver the Probation Act.
