Bonagee travelled to Hunky Dory Park in Drogheda on Sunday in an effort to make it into the quarter finals of the FAI Youth cup, but were beaten by six goals to two, a scoreline that did not reflect Bonagees overall performance.
The home side took advantage of poor defending as early as the 5th minute, when Aiden Bissett scored from ten yards, following a pass from Brian Bird.
Bonagee drew level in the 19th minute, when Lee McMonagle outpaced the Drogheda defence, rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the back of the net, following a pass from Ronan Duffy.
Drogheda regained the lead in the 26th minute when Sean Clarke powered home a header at the back post from a corner by Jason Swift.
They doubled their advantage eight minutes later, again from a corner. Bonagee netminder, Conor Harley, parried another Clarke header, but only as far as Anto Willaims, who bundled the ball over the line. The fourth came two minutes later, when Philip Kavanaghs through ball was hammered into the bottom corner by Williams, for his second of the game.
Two minutes before half time, the impressive Williams tried his luck from 20 yards, but his attempt came back of the crossbar, but unfortunately for the visitors, Bissett was on hand to score the rebound from 12 yards.
Bonagee made a couple of changes and their second half performance was much better.
They could have scored on three separate occasions, but efforts from Jamie McCarry, Dean Larkin and Chris Moran all went narrowly wide. Drogheda scored their sixth through Sean O’Rourke in the 75th minute, before John Kavanagh headed home Bonagee’s second in the 83rd minute. Team performances from both sides.
