Letterkenny has a new Senator after Jimmy Harte was last night elected to the Seanad.

The popular businessman had polled very well in early counts which took place in the Dail this morning, being 4th overall out of 35 candidates and this evening he finally reached the quota.

Senator Harte told donegaldaily.com tonight: “I’m delighted and honoured to have been elected to the Seanad.

“I look forward to giving the whole of Donegal a voice in Leinster House.

“I will also represent the views of all those I met throughout my extensive journey across the State in recent weeks. I want to pay tribute to all those who have supported me throughout both the Dail and Seanad election campaigns.”

Senator Harte, the son of former TD Paddy Harte, secured 70 first preference votes and is in fourth place in the voting out of 35 candidates with nine seats up for grabs.

He was joined by his delighted family inlcuidng his wife Mary and four children.

He is the second Senator elected this time around from Donegal – with Fianna Fail’s Brian O Domhnaill elected yesterday.

It means both constituencies in Donegal will have a voice in the next Seanad.
