CUSTOMS officials backed by gardai are carrying out a series of operations across Donegal today, targeting motorists using laundered or agricultural diesel.
A series of rolling checkpoints took place today, with more planned over the coming days.
At one roadblock, at the junction of the Dunlewey and Gaoth Dobhair roads earlier today, customs officers used specialist equipment to check the fuel being used by drivers of cars, lorries and vans.
It is part of an operation to detect both dodgy diesel users and the sources of that illegal fuel.
“We have become aware in recent weeks that the number of motorists using either agricultural diesel directly or laundered agricultural diesel may have increased significantly,” said one Customs source.
“We are reacting to that and a number of vehicles have been stopped and checked in County Donegal in recent days.
“Operations will continue over the coming days, with intelligence-led investigations in a number of areas.”
Motorists caught using dodgy diesel can lose their vehicles and face huge fines.
