RTE’S NATIONWIDE TO FEATURE DONEGAL THIS EVENING

A Nationwide special featuring some of Donegal’s most famous characters and sites is to feature on RTE this evening.

The three items to feature on this evening’s porgramme on RTE 1 at 7pm features the story of Fr.James McDyer of Glencomcille, the cliffs at Sliabh League and also the story of Kilcar yarns.

Viewers can hear the story of Fr McDyer – a remarkable man who many say was ahead of his time and who would love to have around today. He came to Glencolmcille, Co. Donegal in the early 1950s to a glen scourged by emigration and set about transforming the lives of its people – creating jobs and much more besides. Using footage from the RTÉ archives and some recently discovered film shot by the man himself, Eileen Magnier tells the story of Father James McDyer.

The team also finds out about the beauty of what has been described as the jewel in the Crown of Co. Donegal, the highest cliffs in Europe on the Sliabh League Peninsula.

The show also features the fascinating story of Donegal tweed. It’s renowned worldwide and used by some of the world’s top fashion designers and it came from a little village in south west Donegal. Call it Donegal Yarn or Donegal Tweed – it’s a unique yarn used for spinning and knitting and it’s made in Kilcar in one of the few traditional wool spinning mills left. Coming in as raw wool, it’s worked through to a finished multicoloured fleck yarn and despite challenging economic times – business is booming!
