Letterkenny Institute of Technology is hosting the largest Careers and Postgraduate Studies Fair yet, on Monday 24 October in An Dánlann sports hall, from 12 noon to 3 pm. It is the largest event of its kind in the Northwest and it’s free.
The Careers and Postgrad event has become a valuable resource for people to find out about opportunities across a number of industry sectors, voluntary work and postgraduate study.
This year the organisers have increased the number of free seminars organiser Catherine Lyster Careers Officer at LYIT says “We’ve added even more useful seminars on topics like interview tips, studying abroad as well as hosting our CV clinic.”
Speaking about the mix of exhibitors she explained, “There is more of an emphasis this year on food science, IT, renewable energy and agriculture. Many industries are actively recruiting and this is a unique occasion to talk directly to potential employers, professional bodies and to postgraduate education providers. Anyone who is looking to find employment, change career or are considering further study will find the event extremely useful. All are welcome.”
Over 50 local and national companies will attend, many in the IT, Food, Science sectors, who are actively recruiting staff. Some well known companies taking part include Pramerica, Abbott Ireland, Allstate Northern Ireland, McColgan Foods, Ecoventi NI, a renewable energy company, specialist recruitment agencies and many more.
There will also be many smaller companies looking to recruit top quality staff for permanent, temporary and part-time opportunities. Graduates looking for relevant work experience will be able to update themselves on the range of programmes on offer currently such as the IBEC Gradlink programme .
For those considering postgraduate study, representatives from prominent universities and colleges throughout Ireland will be attending to offer advice on their range of postgraduate study options.
In addition to full-time study, many courses can now be completed on a part-time or distance learning basis. Universities taking part include Open University, Queens, Smurfit Business School as well as universities from the UK. Voluntary work is also a useful way for job seekers to develop valuable skills and many well known voluntary associations will be there.
“Even though we are in tough economic times, there are still excellent opportunities,” claims the Institute’s Careers Officer, Catherine Lyster.
“We would strongly recommend that anyone looking to find out what their next career step is to come along. They will be able to talk to professionals face to face about the options available. Many of the companies attending do have openings right now.”
For people thinking about a career change or who would like to explore their career choices, expert advice will be offered by the professional bodies taking part.
Examples of associations who will attend include Engineers Ireland, the accountancy bodies, Society of Chartered Surveyors, Chartered Institute of Building in Ireland and Nursing Careers, as well as voluntary organisations such as The Donegal Volunteer Centre.

LYIT President, Paul Hannigan, emphasised the importance of the event.

As always the Careers Fair is a useful source for a wide range of career choices, real employment options, further study or people considering setting up in business.
