BUNCRANA GAA NOTES FOR WEEK ENDING SUNDAY 30th October 2011

Buncrana GAA Strictly Come Dancing

All club members are asked to put in a final big push this week to promote this event and make it a success for the club.  A humongous effort has already been put in by the dancers, organisers and helpers to date.  It would be almost criminal not to reward this effort with the success it so richly deserves on the night.  Ten local dance couples, some with no previous dance experience, have been paired together for the event and put through their paces by dance teacher Elizabeth O’Donnell over the last number of months.  Competition is lively between the dancers and as the deadline approaches, practice has intensified and will culminate in an extremely professional and entertaining evening in the Plaza, 8pm on Sunday 30th, don’t miss it!

Tickets are priced at €15 and are available from any of the dancers, An Siopa Gruaige, The Coffee Cup, Catriona (086 852 1011), Jacqueline (087 786 5146) or call to the Clubhouse Fridays 7-8pm.  Check out our facebook page.  Please support our club in what promises to be a great night’s entertainment.

Senior Football – Milford v Buncrana

Sunday 23rd October.  Baile na nGallogach 2-12 to Buncranncha 0-16.  This was a disappointing performance on the back of an excellent victory over Aodh Rua the previous week.  Milford adapted better to the tough conditions and went into a 1-1 to no score lead to signal their intent early in the game aided by a penalty goal that Noel O’Donnell was very unlucky not to keep out.  The lads responded very well in kicking five straight points with two apiece from Gerard McLaughlin and Paul McGonigle with Odhran Doherty chipping in with his trusty right boot.  Dominating at this stage the lads were hit with a second sucker punch goal from one of the Curley brothers in the full forward line who proved a real handful all evening. A Ryan Bradley point left the halftime score 2-4 to 0-6.

Playing down the hill in the second half the good start needed never materialised and we soon found ourselves down by 8 points.  A brilliant comeback from the lads included great scores from Ronan Doherty Fahan,(2) Paul McGonigle (3), Ciaran Nicholas (1) and Odhran Doherty (2) bringing us right back into the match.  A number of missed chances and bad decisions cost us the lead score that surely would have given us victory but in fairness to Milford they stuck at their task and scored an injury time winner to somehow hold out for the win.  The lads will be disappointed at conceding one of their biggest scores of the season but can take solace from the manner of the repeated comebacks.  It looks like the seniors are destined to remain in the third tier of the all county league and on the evidence of Saturday evening this will help add another layer of experience for the young lads from this year’s under 16 grade who will be included in next season’s squad.  There is now one game remaining against Naomh Brid.

Buncrana GAA Scrap Saturdays BIG Christmas Clear Out – Fundraiser

In conjunction with Buncrana Tidy Town’s Initiative we plan to facilitate the lifting of old waste metals and other materials throughout the entire parish.

We will sort this material ourselves and then supply it to a local scrap merchant.  This will provide us with some much needed funding and also carry out a valuable community and environmental service.  Buncrana GAA will then make a donation to Buncrana Tidy Town’s Inititiative.

Team leaders from within the club are tasked with sourcing their own help and vehicles etc and this will not be a problem.  We start collections on the 05th of November and will continue for 3 to 4 weeks depending on demand and progress through each leaders’ designated area.

Buncrana Parish League for National Schools

Day 2 of our Parish League produced another round of exciting games and ended with the Lions,

managed by Lawrence Hegarty, in pole position. Malachy Mc Cann and his apprentice, Paul Mc

Gonigle, brought a strong panel from the Illies and they faced the silken skills of Brendan Roche’s

Drumfries team. This game was played under the watchful eye of referee and county star Ryan

Bradley. The game of the round was the controversial draw played out between the Gaelscoil and

Sean Clerkin’s Cheetah’s. Brendan Ryan’s Tigers and Declan Doherty’s Panthers now lie in mid-table

closely followed by an enthusiastic Cockhill outfit expertly coached by Odhran and Ronan Doherty.

The standard of play on the day was matched only by the common sense approach of the men-in-

the-middle Leo Gill and Conor Grant. Come to the Scarvey next Friday 28th at 3.20pm and you will

be guaranteed thrills and spills on Day 3 of this enthralling tournament.:

POSITION TEAM GAMES PLAYED POINTS
1 Lawrence’s Lions 5 15
2 Gaelscoil 5 14
3 Sean’s Cheetahs 5 12
4 Brendan’s Tigers 5 11
5 Declan’s Panthers 4 8
6 Illies 5 7
7 Cockhill 5 5

Anyone interested in coaching, refereeing or assisting managers call to Scarvey for 3.15 on Friday afternoon for the start of the inter school Parish league. Great way to make a start at coaching and managing.
