Information Seminar: Developing an Integration Strategy for your Organisation
The Integration Centre will host an information seminar to promote the development
of Integration Strategies for organisations in Donegal. The Participatory Project Officer
(Northeast Region) will present this seminar. The Integration Centre is a
non-governmental organisation that is committed to the integration and inclusion
of people from immigrant backgrounds in Ireland.

The Home Place: Drama Workshop and Facilitated Discussion
“The Home Place” is a short one-act play; commissioned by Donegal County Council’s
One Donegal Initiative, that seeks to examine and challenge the perceptions of the
Protestant community in Donegal, from both within and without that community.
The play looks at how three different characters from that community manifest
and communicate their own feelings about their culture and identity. The play will be
followed by a facilitated discussion that allows the audience to engage with each other
and the author about the issues and themes of the play, and, in doing this, challenge
attitudes through open and meaningful dialogue.

Embedding Diversity in Youth Work: Training Workshop
This training course will introduce participants to the use of a newly developed Diversity
Toolkit for carrying out a diversity assessment on youth projects. It will demonstrate
how to develop an action plan based on identified gaps in service. It will present
practical routes to achieve new diversity goals.
The Programme will: Build understanding on the importance of diversity work and how
to ensure that diversity is the norm in youth services, provide information on the needs
and issues of diverse youth in the community and identify challenges and planning
for change within a youth work setting. In planning for change it guides participants
through a self-assessment of their organisations, examines practical ways to achieve
new diversity goals, gives practical tips for engaging with a wide variety of young people
and leads participants through the development of an action plan to bridge the gaps
identified in their service.
This course will suit individuals that have a professional role – voluntary or staff – in a
youth work setting. It is designed especially for anyone involved in planning, evaluation
and programme development. Spaces are limited.

Buncrana Book Club: Monthly book group discussion
Buncrana book club meet monthly on the first Wednesday of the month in Buncrana
Community Library at 7pm. Nine women of all ages and cultural backgrounds come
together to discuss a chosen title. It’s informal, lively and time passes very quickly
and in fact it often continues past the allocated time frame. We read from a diverse
collection of titles and for Cultural diversity month will read “The swallows of Kabul”.

Chambers Ireland’s Excellence in Local Government Awards
The ‘How We Remember’ – 28 Inf Battalion exhibition curated by the Donegal County
Museum, Donegal County Council has been shortlisted in the Sustaining the Arts
category of the Chambers Ireland’s Excellence in Local Government Awards. The 2011
Excellence in Local Government Awards are run in conjunction with Department of
Environment, Community and Local Government. All those shortlisted will be awarded a
Citation of Best Practice on the night.
The exhibition and its associated education programme ran in the County Museum,
Letterkenny from the 4th March 2011 until the 26th June 2011. Through this exhibition
and education programme the role of the 28th Infantry Battalion in peacekeeping both
at home and abroad was remembered and celebrated. The Battalion members and their
families have played a very significant role in the economic, social and cultural lives of
the county in particular in Letterkenny, Lifford and Bundoran/Ballyshannon.
The ‘How We Remember’ project built on Donegal County Council offering the 28th
Infantry Battalion the honour of Freedom of the County in April 2009 for their unselfish
dedication to the security and stability of the County during the Troubles. This project
was supported by the PEACE III Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes
Body by Donegal County Council.

Good Relations Workshops of storytelling, creative writing and
comic book illustration with the Verbal Arts Centre
The Verbal Arts Centre’s See Me See You programme is specifically designed to bring
young people from the two main religions and traditions in Ireland together in a safe
and secure environment. The programme enables the participants to have their voice
heard and to tell their story. The programme encourages purposeful discussion on
sectarianism, discrimination, prejudices
and stereotyping. By discussing these
issues and raising awareness, the
groups become familiar with them.
The programme aim is to then dispel
any misconceptions and common
perceptions. The groups will then
undertake a creative workshop in
comic book illustration which is a fun,
accessible, engaging and innovative
way to tell stories.

Beyond the Pale: Promenade Theatre
Tyrone-Derry and Donegal Action in association with Blue Eagle productions presents
‘Beyond the Pale‘- by Jonathan Burgess.
A costumed sketch providing a snapshot of the story of Plantation pertinent to the
Donegal Town area. Although historically accurate, the sketch will look at the subject
of the Plantation in a light-hearted manner. The sketch is professionally produced and
uses the natural space and ambiance of Donegal Castle for the performance, utilising
various parts of the castle and creating a promenade performance.

Armistice Day Remembrance Event
Inishowen Friends of Messines are holding a Remembrance
Service to be held at the Fort Dunree Memorial Wall and
Peace Garden to mark Armistice Day. As part of the PEACE
III funded Fort Dunree Remembrance Project a lasting
legacy was created with the construction of the Fort Dunree
Memorial Wall. Formally opened in June 2011, the wall
consists of 226 people from all the parishes in Inishowen
who gave their lives during World War I. This will be the first
opportunity that Inishowen Friends of Messines will have
to conduct a formal Armistice Ceremony in line with all the other ceremonies across the
world at this time. There will be an ecumenical service of Remembrance, wreath laying
and musical accompaniment.

Sharing Stories
The exhibition featuring an exciting visual display of extracts from
over twenty short films represents the culmination of a major
two-year community film programme. The International Fund for
Ireland funded cross-border project contains an incredibly rich
array of stories about life in Donegal and Derry. Sharing Stories is
organised by Donegal County Council Regional Cultural Centre in
partnership with the Nerve Centre Derry.

Faces
During the months of August, September and October this year, groups of people
from many different cultures and ethnicities across County Donegal learned to look
themselves and each other in the face. They attended art workshops where they
examined how the ‘other’ looked, finding differences and commonalities.
They portrayed what they saw through different art forms, and the result can be
viewed in this remarkable exhibition. Faces is organised by Donegal County Council

A photographic exhibition commissioned by the Donegal CDB Peace and Reconciliation
Partnership to capture the essence of the projects supported through Phase I of the
PEACE III programme in Donegal. The project was completed by Still Design.
A website complements the exhibition comprising additional images from the featured
projects with accompanying audio to bring life to the projects supported.

Laureate International Libraries Exhibition
Central Library and the Europe Direct Information
Centre will be hosting a book exhibition following on from the visit of the Children’s
Poet Laureate, Siobhan Parkinson in October. The visit will take place in Central
Library, Letterkenny on 25th October at 11am and will involve local school children
from various cultural backgrounds. Following on from this there will be a selection of
International titles from the Books Beyond Borders project.
The exhibition will run for the whole month of November
Books Beyond Borders aims to explore the topic of
books and reading in multi-cultural societies. The
discussion will be led by Laureate na nÓg, Siobhán
Parkinson, and Austrian writer, Rachell Van Kooig,
and will draw on children, their teachers, educators in
the wider context and anybody involved in the worlds
of children’s literature, education, multiculturalism
and in integration.
Books Beyond Borders is an initiative of the
Laureate na nÓg and is supported by The Arts Council,
Poetry Ireland, Children’s Books Ireland and
The Austrian Embassy.

An exhibition of 23 Biblical Paintings with extracts from the New Testament and the
Psalms which depict a journey of hope from depression to healing and peace.
The paintings illustrate the journey and God’s Word, which can unite us in the midst of
all the religious diversity which surrounds us.
Our unity is not in our conformity to man-made rules and regulations but in our
Christian Cultural Diversity, which is founded on Jesus Christ, the Corner stone who is
the Way, the Truth and the Life.
