Gardai have warned that burglars are prowling around empty houses to find valuables to sell for Christmas.

The warning comes after a spate of burglaries in houses across Letterkenny.

Gardai do not know if the same gang is behind the thefts but the thieves have used similar methods to break into a number of homes.

The gang remove beading from windows before carefully taking out glass and climbing through into the properties.

Thousands of euro worth of property including laptop computers, cameras, phones and jewellery has been taken on raids on homes in Willowbrook and College Farm Road in recent days.

One woman, whose home was burgled in recent days, told Donegaldaily.com that she felt sick by what had happened.

“It was bad enough that all this stuff was taken but the thought that somebody was going around my house and going through all my stuff just made me sick.

“It seemed like they knew exactly what they wanted. They took things they could sell easily like a laptop and a camera.

“There was other stuff there, new stuff that I had bought for Christmas, but they just ignored that,” she said.

The woman said she spoke to Gardai who told her that thieves were now stockpiling stolen items so they could sell them on for Christmas cash.
