McCARTHY: ‘I’M GLAD I PLAYED FOR IRELAND – AND WANT TO GO TO EURO 2012

HE was vilified by certain elements in Scotland when he chose to play for Ireland.

Now soccer star James McCarthy is hoping the decision to follow the country of his grandad’s birth will land him on the plane to Euro 2012.

James, whose grandfather was from Gaoth Dobhair, grew up in a strong Donegal-connected community in Glasgow.

The Wigan Athletic player is one of the most exciting players in the English Premier League and is hoping he makes the squad for Poland & Ukraine.

“Hopefully I can get a seat on that plane,” said James, a regular visitor to see relatives in Co Donegal.

“I know I need to keep working hard at Wigan but it would be a dream come true to play at the European Championships.”

McCarthy, 21, was torn to shreds in the Scottish media when he opted for Ireland over Scotland.

He suffered the same abuse as Aidan McGeady whose grandparents are also from west Donegal.
