The St Eunan’s man received a straight red card from referee Marty Duffy just before half-time for lashing out at opponent Kevin McLoughlin, who had tried to choke him.
It was clear Rory was trying to get McLoughlin’s grip around his neck released.
“If there is nothing much in it then we will be appealing it,” said manager Jim McGuinness.
“He is a big loss to us and we will need every man we can get going to Croke Park next week against Dublin. But Martin McElhinney has come back and that gives us some options.”
McGuinness was otherwise pleased with the comeback against Mayo.
“Obviously the writing was on the wall for us with Rory being sent off and it left it a very difficult situation for us to try and turn it around, but I was very happy about the way we turned it around,” said Jim.
“It was great to see our defenders attacking at pace. The last day we stood back and watched a very good Kerry team and every day is a school day and I hope we are still learning.
“Our priorities are not based on the league and hopefully we can get enough points to stay up.”
