Donegal tourism received a huge shot in the arm with a 12-page supplement in today’s Irish Independent which promotes Donegal as a golfing and tourism destination.
The supplement has been described as a “useful marketing tool” for the county by local TD Deputy Joe McHugh.
The supplement, which has been produced by Fáilte Ireland, gives major promotion to Donegal golf courses and many of the county’s other tourism attractions.
Ballyliffin, Rosapenna, Portsalon, Bundoran, Narin & Portnoo golf courses are the subjects of major features in the supplement which is called Tee Time in Donegal.
The supplement will circulate to the Irish Independent’s 477,000 daily readers and will also promote other Donegal tourism attractions, including Glenveagh National Park, the Lough Foyle and Lough Swilly ferries, the Sliabh Liag cliffs and Donegal Good Food Taverns.
Minister for Tourism Leo Varadkar requested Fáilte Ireland to produce the supplement, following discussions with Deputy Joe McHugh and Donegal tourism representatives at the Colmcille Winter School in Gartan last February.
Deputy McHugh had first raised the idea with Minister Varadkar at a meeting last winter.
“The 12-page supplement in today’s edition of the Irish Independent, gives major promotion to Donegal as a golfing and tourism destination.
“The supplement, entitled Tee Time in Donegal, is ideal exposure for some of our county’s leading golf courses. The supplement also promotes a range of our county’s other tourism features, and the quality of our county’s hospitality sector is highlighted through references and advertisements for a range of hostelries and hotels across the county. It will hopefully prove to be a useful marketing tool for Donegal tourism this summer.
“The supplement is a direct pitch to Irish golfing enthusiasts who will attend the Irish Open at the Royal Portrush course in June. The Irish Open has particular significance this year because of the participation of Major winners Darren Clarke, Rory Mcllroy and Graeme McDowell. Portrush is 20 miles from McGilligan, which is a 15-minute ferry journey from Greencastle. The Irish Open is on Donegal’s doorstep, and this supplement encourages golf fans to stay in Donegal when attending the Open.
“I am grateful to Minister Varadkar for coming to Gartan on the last weekend of February to address the Colmcille Winter School, and for visiting Rosapenna Golf Club that weekend to meet with Fáilte Ireland and Donegal golf representatives. Minister Varadkar played a crucial role in getting this initiative off the ground.
“I compliment Fáilte Ireland and particularly Ms Joan Crawford of Fáilte Ireland Donegal, for that organisation’s work on producing the supplement,” he said.
