A public meeting to discuss the up-coming referendum on the European Fiscal Compact Treaty is to be held in Dungloe tomorrow, Friday 27thApril.
The meeting will include guest speakers Independent TD Thomas Pringle, Socialist Party MEP Pól Murphy and local independent political activist Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig (pictured).
The referendum, on 31st May, will decide whether or not we want to fall into line with the treaty being set up by other European leaders and financial bodies to give more control over how debt lending to countries is carried out. It comes in the wake of the financial meltdown in recent years which seen governments across Europe borrowing massive amounts of money from the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank in an attempt to bail out failing banks.
Organiser of the Dungloe meeting Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig said that it was very important that people informed themselves on this referendum as it held huge implications for the country and the future of its people.
“I would urge people to inform themselves of this up-coming referendum and not just listen to the spin put on it by the government and financial institutions. This referendum is the latest attempt by the bureaucrats in Europe to take more control of our country and if passed will see the people of this state paying even more money to a bailout fund” Mr Mac Giolla Easbuig said.
“It is highly questionable whether or not this treaty is even legal. Already proceedings have been initiated by Thomas Pringle to determine if the treaty is legal under EU treaty law and Irish Constitutional law given the fact that it will mean we will be directed to raise capital to the tune of over €11billion at the behest of a European institution. There is also the possiblity that this figure could be increased if so demanded but yet we will have no say over how this money is used.
“It is just another attempt by the political establishment across Europe to shore up an already failed financial system which solely has the interestes of big business at its heart. Once again we see another move to make the majority of our society pay for the mistakes of a small and extremely wealthy elite and continue on a road of boom and bust with little regard for the ordinary people. So this meeting in Dungloe will be a good opportunity for people to discuss the treaty and referendum and to make an informed decision on May 31st . We will explain the reasons why we think the treaty should be rejected .”
