Naomh Colmcille edge past Convoy.
Naomh Colmcille seniors registered their fifth consecutive victory yesterday evening away to Convoy with a hard fought victory, winning by 1-10 to 0-10 despite Convoy’s strong second half comeback.
Naomh Colmcille controlled the first half, winning the defensive and midfield battles and moving the ball quickly from back to front at every opportunity. Two points from Ciaran Callaghan, a goal and two points from Ryan McErlean and a point apiece from Don Hegarty and Thomas McKinley gave the visitors a half time lead of 1-06 to 0-01 and they looked to be cruising as the first half came to an end.
However, the second half was to be a different story. Convoy registered five points without reply in the third quarter and also hit the woodwork before Ciaran Callaghan got the first point of the second half for Naomh Colmcille. Convoy were winning a lot of ball around the centre at this stage and tagged on another two points as the game entered the fourth quarter. Mark Dowds replied with a point for Naomh Colmcille but Convoy pulled back a further two points to peg the scores back to a single point at 1-08 to 0-10 with ten minutes to go.
But just as it looked like Convoy were going to level the scores and possibly go on to win the game, Naomh Colmcille produced two excellent late points to secure the victory: Andrew Clarke with the first after being set up by a combination of Thomas McKinley and Ryan McErlean, and then McErlean sent the ball over himself from a tight angle on the right.
So despite Convoy’s comeback in the second half, Naomh Colmcille dug deep in the last five minutes and did enough to run out winners by 1-10 to 0-10 and secure their fifth consecutive win in the league.
