The Ballintra Landfill site is to close next week, Sinn Féin Bundoran Town Councillor Diarmaid Doherty has said.
“I have spoken with staff in Donegal County Council today and they have confirmed that the Landfill site in Ballintra is to close next Tuesday. I understand that refuse collectors in the County have been informed of this in a letter sent by the Council,” he said.
“This site was scheduled for closure in 2013. The landfill site is currently the only one in the county and I am concerned that poor waste management by the County Council has resulted in the site reaching full capacity earlier than was anticipated.
“The Council have given members of the public no notice of the decision to close the site and I am aware that many people use the site to dispose of domestic waste. I would ask the Council to clarify the facilities available to ensure the appropriate disposal of waste, in particular larger items such as household appliances.
“It is suggested that the nearest landfill site is a considerable distance away and I would ask the Council to clarify what measures are being taken to offset any additional costs of waste collection services to the consumer.
Concluding, Cllr Doherty said: “I feel that the Council have questions to answer in relation to the waste management strategy which led to this result.
“I would ask the Council now to intensify their search for an alternative appropriatelandfill site in the county to ensure that the consumer may properly dispose of their waste in a cost effective manner.”
