GOLF NEWS: ROSAPENNA CLUB NOTES

ROSAPENNA ARE ULSTER CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to the Rosapenna Irish Mixed Foursomes team captained by Bernadette North & Peter Smyth who overcame a very strong Mannan Castle side 3-2 in the Ulster Final last Friday at Omagh Golf Club.

This is Rosapenna Golf Club’s first ever Ulster title since the club was formed in 1895.

On the day the first pairing of Dypnma Kelly & Enda Kennedy were involved in a tight tussle and were all square playing the long 14th which they won with bogey 5 and proceeded to half the Par  15th and win holes 16 & 17 with Pars to win 3&1 putting the first point on the board for Rosapenna.

The second pairing of Suzanne Gallagher & Con Boyce came up against possibly Mannan’s strongest pair losing 2&1.

In the third match Terri McBride & Frank Casey Jnr were all square after 10 holes and won the tricky 11th hole with a Par 4 and haved holes 12-16 and on the tough Par 3 17th Terri played a fantastic chip from pin high right to within an inch of the hole to secure a Par 3 to win the hole and the match 2&1 to secure our second full point.

In the fourth match Kit Boyce & Pat Boyce were 1 up playing 16 and lost the hole to a Par 4 and also lost the 17th to a Par 3 to go one down with one hole to play and the match finished in Mannan’s favour by just 1 hole.

With the tie now set at 2-2 the Rosapenna’s final pairing of Orla Mallon & Marty McDermott were 2 up on the 16th tee. They lost the 16th to a Par 4 and proceeded to the tight Par 3 17th with a slim one hole advantage in the deciding match.

Marty hit an 8 iron to the front edge from where Orla would cosy her birdie effort up to the hole for a Par 3 which halved the hole to remain 1 up with 1 hole to play.

On the 18th tee the drive from Mannan Castle stayed in bounds by just 6 inches and Orla spilt the fairway leaving Marty just a wedge which he hit to 12 feet directly behind the hole.

Orla again left her downhill putt to within a few feet and when Mannan’s pair could only manage a Par 4 Marty tapped in his two footer to send Rosapenna to the All Ireland Finals for the first time in our clubs 119 year history.

The All Ireland finals will take place at Clontarf Golf Club (Founded 1912: celebrating their centenary) this Thursday & Friday the 6th & 7th of September with Ulster (Rosapenna) vs Leinster (Rathfarnham) at 11.35am on Thursday the 6th in the semi final. Sponsored by the Spanish Tourist Board but started in 1972 as a competition between clubs in Connacht and Leinster, the Irish Mixed Foursomes has evolved into a National event, and is now in its 40th year as Ireland’s only Mixed event at adult level. With entries exceeding 325 clubs each year, there is immense competition within clubs to secure a place on the club Mixed team. Club panels generally include up to 12 men, and 12 women, all competing for a place on the ten-person team, made up of five pairings.

This means at the start of each season there are almost 8,000 men and women involved in the Irish Mixed Foursomes, hoping to reach the National Finals, staged in September each year separate from the other GUI cups & shield events.

Mr Mick Gallagher’s 2012 Presidents Prize took place last Saturday over the Old Tom Morris Links.

The seniors section was won by Joe Chambers 16 with 31 pts. The front nine winner was Kieran Gallagher 12 with 23 pts and the back nine winner was Eddie McGinley 16 with 22 pts bot.

The Sunday club competition on the 2nd Sept held over the Old Tom Morris Links was won by Mickey Treanor 21 with 38 pts bot, runner up was Patrick McClafferty 11 with 38 pts.
