RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta’s Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí will make a triumphant return to the airwaves next week having been shortlisted for a PPI award for the best radio programme in Irish.

Meanwhile, Áine Ní Churráin also sits back into the presenter’s chair for a new season of Barrscéalta. The programme Fear an Éisc, an independent production by Sound Woman Productions for RnaG, is also shortlisted for a PPI award.

The bold Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí will return to the airwaves next week with a new season of Rónán Beo @3 Tuesday-Friday 3pm on Raidió na Gaeltachta. Listeners can expect the usual fun and madness, with plenty of food for thought thrown in.

Rónán will have some sean-nós novices in studio each week for the next two months, as they train for the sean-nós competitions in the upcoming Oireachtas festival in Letterkenny in November. The programme has an excellent record, with the previous trainees winning prizes by the bucket load at the last two Oireachtais, so no pressure on these newbies!

The programme will also bring back their regular feature with the word experts on Tuesday, a listener favourite where Micí Mac Aoidh from Inis Bó Finne, as well as his Connemara counterpart Máire Feiritéar and Kerryman Toose Mac Gearailt, unravel the intricacies of language and meaning. Brian Danny Minny will be back with weekly cookery tips, and Lynette Fay will keep us up to date on the celebrity gossip, to mention just some of the programme features.

Áine Ní Churráin will be back presenting Barrscéalta at 11 am Monday to Friday in the autumn schedule, with the programme team keeping a sharp eye on news stories in the northwest, and national stories with implications for Donegal.

The regular weekly features will return with Fear na Ríomhairí Andy Caomhánach, the computer doctor, reporting on all things techie on Wednesdays, solicitor Antóin Delap will be answering legal queries on Thursdays, and Dr Tony Delap answering questions on health on Fridays.

The programme will be out and about as well in the coming months, taking part in some of the walks organised in the county, and visiting places of historical interest. With the excitement building ahead of the big match on Sunday 23 September, Barrscéalta will be there at the heart of things broadcasting live from the Burlington Hotel in Dublin on Monday 24 September, win, lose or draw!

They will also be looking forward to the Oireachtas festival in Letterkenny at the start of November and will broadcast live from there.

Fear an Éisc is a documentary about fishmonger Jack McDevitt, and follows him for the day from his early morning visits to the fish sales in Killybegs, to different markets throughout Donegal, and selling door to door. It was made by Mary Phelan/Sound Woman Productions for Raidió na Gaeltachta and broadcast at Christmas.
