A COUNTY DONEGAL man has got his hands on Sam Maguire – a week before the All-Ireland final.
Patrick Houton, from the Malin GAA club, was named Ireland’s No1 fan!
And the accolade doesn’t just come with the honour of lifting Ireland’s most famous sports trophy.
He also got his hands on a superb prize of €10,000 for his club.
Patrick has been Club Treasurer for the past 13 years and currently performs the role of Vice Treasurer.
He is also the current ladies team main sponsor and is one of the main men behind the Malin lotto, a key source of income for the Connolly Park club.
The competition was run by Today FM and Supervalu – with Patrick making it through to the last four, before claiming the title.
Last year Mary ‘Football’ Breslin from Kilcar took the overall award.
Patrick was nominated by daughter Jacqueline.
“I thought he would be a great candidate for this due to all the work he has done for the Malin GAA club over the past number of years,” she said.
“So I wrote up a section on why I think my father Patrick Houton is Ireland’s number one GAA supporter and sent it away.
“I thought nothing of it and a few days later I received a phone call in relation to the competition. I was told Dad had been short listed down to the final four competitors in the competition out of thousands of entries.
“Dad has done a lot for the Malin GAA club over numerous years.
“Dad has 26 great lotto sellers from around the parish of whom he collects lottos from every Sunday morning without fail. The lotto money is the club’s main source of income and without this money Malin couldn’t function as a club.”
