GOLF NEWS: LETTERKENNY GOLF CLUB LADIES NEWS

The annual Indian summer we get in September just hasn’t quite materialised this year. Hence the golfing season has wound down rather quickly. Not of course, before the gents of Letterkenny Golf Clubs Ulster Cup Team thrilled us, with a fantastic match against Rossmore to lift the title last won in 2010. Congratulations to Charlie Coughlan, his team and caddies who have proudly put the silverware back into the cabinet again.

The club Mixed Foursomes Final provided almost equal excitement as the match went down to the wire on the 19th hole. A great match played in good spirits. Well done to Karen Crawford and Danny McLaughlin, who co-incidentally sank the winning putt on the 16th for the Ulster Cup. Commiserations and congratulations to the other finalists, Grainne Hines and Seamus Patton.

The Lady Captain led a team to Portsalon at the weekend to contest the annual Mary McDaid Memorial Cup in honour not only of Mary but of all deceased members we have known so well and played with over the years. Played with great spirit and fun, the four clubs taking part were the hosts Portsalon, Letterkenny, Ottway and Rosapenna. Many thanks to the McDaid family, Portsalon Golf Club for their wonderful hospitality and Sarah Nicholls for the lovely high calorie cakes yet again!

It is always nice to see new names breaking through to the winners enclosures. The 36 handicap competition was won by Catherine Ryan with 25 points. While not a winner on this occasion, it is certainly nice to report that Triona Daly, no doubt under the watchful tutelage of her Mother, Agnes Wiseman, came second with 24 points. Patricia McLaughlin 3rd with 21 points.

Bridget McClafferty won the 13 hole competition on the 11th Sept with 27 points, Eileen Daly 2nd 25 points and Monica McDonagh 3rd 24 points.

The Hospitals Society Captain, Cynthia Fuery ran a 9 hole competition for lady members on her Captains Day. The winner was Siobhan Wherity 18 points, Eileen Harvey 17 points B.O.T. and 3rd Bridie Gildea 17 points.

Best wishes to Lady captain Angela and ladies who goes to Redcastle Hotel this weekend for her Lady captains outing. The coveted Lady Captains trophy at stake. Don’t forget to bring along a small prize to the value of €10. Tea and scones served at 11am with 12 midday tee time on Saturday.

There will be a club 13 hole competition on Tuesday alongside the 13 hole competition for the 36 handicap ladies.
