The Under 16 B Championship Hurling Final was played on a damp Thursday evening in Burt GAA pitch.

St Eunan’s the B League Champions took on a strong determined Carndonagh team, the defending champions. St Eunans opened brightly with a point from David Ireland and a brace from star forward Niall O Donnell.

Carndonagh then rocked the Letterkenny lads with a goal and point from Cathal Doherty on the ten minute mark. Carndonagh held this narrow lead with a great defensive display for ten minutes before Niall O Donnell levelled with a great point from play followed quickly by another point from the same player to retake the lead. St Eunans then broke through the Carndonagh defence to score two crucial goals as half time approached. The score at the break was 2.06 to 1.01 to St Eunans.

The second half was a very tight affair with both teams raising the intensity level.

St Eunan’s Conor O Grady scored the opening point of the half on 32 minutes however with both defences on top it was twelve minutes before St Eunans scored with three points in succession from Niall O Donnell, Shaun Halvey and David Ireland.

Carndonagh then threw everything they had into attack but despite coming close they were unable to breakdown St Eunan’s defence ably led by Stephen Doherty and Caoimhin O Lionnáin.

St Eunans then closed out the game with three points from Niall O Donnell in the last ten minutes.

The match was a great advertisement for Donegal hurling full of passion, skill and bravery from both teams with all scores coming from play. Best for Carndonagh were Cathal Doherty, Danny Monagle and James Monagle, whilst Niall O Donnell, David Ireland, Aaron O Connell and Stephen Doherty stood out for Eunans. Final score was 2.12 to 1.01.

The Trophy was presented to the St Eunan’s Captain David Ireland by Manus O Donnell who refereed the match. He thanked the both teams for the great game and Burt for the generous use of their facilities.
