Donegal Sports Partnership will host their annual Sports Ability Day on Saturday October 13th in An Dánlann sports centre at Letterkenny Institute of Technology.
The Sports Ability Day is a “Come & Try” event for people with disabilities with a variety of sports on offer for participants to try including football, gaelic games, boccia, sportshall athletics, badminton, tandem cycling, handcycling and wheelchair sports.
Activities are delivered by the National Governing Bodies of Sport in conjunction with local sports clubs and coaches but any coach or volunteer is welcome to come along and lend a hand.
The initiative which was launched in 2008 is supported by the Irish Sports Council and has seen many positive developments to-date in Donegal with approximately 800 individuals with disabilities having participated in sports programmes or events, with similar numbers having participated in education and training programmes.
Feedback from those taking part in the Sports Ability Day has been very positive with many coaching sessions established as a result of interest expressed at the event.
Speaking in advance of the event SIDO with Donegal Sports Partnership Thérèse Laverty encouraged people of all abilities to come along and join in on the day.
“The event is hosted on an annual basis and gives people the opportunity to try new sports, I’d like to encourage people with disabilities, their friends and family members to attend the event and see what we have on offer. We would also like to ask that participants register in advance of the event.”
