Brynsford Co Down 1–8 Termon 5–5

Maureen O’Donnell turned in a five star display to push Termon over the line in a bruising encounter at Brynsford last night.

This was a game that had everything, three sending offs, terrific play, great goals and a backdrop of the Mourne mountains that hung like a post card setting to the town end of the Brynsford grounds.

Termon got off to the perfect start when Eimer Gallagher fed Geraldine Mc Laughlin for a point from the throw-in. Maureen O Donnell was in the thick of the action in the opening minutes and this fact was noted by the Brynsford defence.

O’Donnell was the subject of close attention and it was no surprise that Brynsford Claren Owens was sin binned after five minutes for a dangerous tackle on O Donnell.

Termon who went in at the break 2–4 1–5 ahead courtesy of 1–2 from Geraldine Mc Laughlin and a goal and a point from o Donnell, with Roisin Friel completing the first half scoring. This half did not end kindly for Termon as Dara Kelly has been sin binned moments earlier following a robust exchange with Emma Joyce in the Brynsford goals.

On the resumption o Donnell opened Termons account with a point. Play swung from end to end before Dara Kelly rejoined proceedings as her ten minutes sin binning had overlapped halftime. Kelly’s worth was very evident to Termon as she was just on the field of play and she had scored a goal. Better was to come as moments later she put the icing on the cake with a second super strike.

O Donnell added a second individual goal and a last minute point to send Termon in the Ulster final against old rival Donaghmoyne the Monaghan champions next Sunday.

This was a game that the backline as a unit from Laura Gallagher out won for Termon. All be it Roisin Mc Cafferty after a shaky start combined with Emer Gallagher to curb Brynsford midfield partnership of Clara Fitzpatrick and Sinead Murphy. These two are the current Down midfieders.

In the forward line Geraldine McLaughlin, Aisling Ryan and sweeper Marie Carr shone. Roisin Friel in the opening period kept Termon in this game while Dara Kelly showed what a powerful performer she can be. Maureen o Donnell who’s age is given on the match programme as thirty something rolled back the years to give a powerful display of top class football in the foothill of the mourne mountains to send Termon into the Ulster final.

Final score Brynsford 1–8 Termon 5–5
