Senior Football: Our seniors made continued on their winning streak in the league with an impressive away win against Downings on Sunday afternoon. Downings started brightly registering one point from play and two points from the dead ball, before Buncrana began to dominate possession, with Paul McGonigle, Ryan Bradley and Odhrán Doherty delivering quality passes into the impressive Darach O’Connor and Gárbhan Friel. A long ball into the full forward line followed by excellent work by Gárbhan Friel resulted in Buncrana’s first goal, the first of three for the full forward. Further points from Odhrán Doherty, Ryan Bradley and Peter McLaughlin meant that Buncrana went in at halftime with a five point lead. Buncrana put an end to any threat of a Downings comeback early in the second half, when a shot by Rónán Doherty rebounded for Friel to claim his second goal of the evening. The surging runs of Kevin O’Loughlin and Peter McLaughlin caused problems for the Downings defence throughout the second half. Friel’s third goal of the evening resulted in Buncrana running out comfortable winners in the end on a scoreline of 3-15 to 0-11.
Senior Reserves: Buncrana reserves made an impressive return to league action following their championship final disappointment with a convincing victory over Downings. It was an excellent team performance, however particularly Impressive for Buncrana were Liam McGinley, Daniel Wilson, Caolan McCann and Kevin Treacy, who scored a personal total of 3-7. Paddy Duffy made an impact when introduced, scoring two points from play. FT Downings 2-7 Buncrana 6-17
Ladies Football Season Summary: For the first time this year the club entered a senior ladies team into county competition, playing in the Junior league and championship. The team began their training early in 2012, with their first competitive league match taking place on home soil in Scarvey on Sunday 15th April, against an experienced Red Hugh’s. The ladies won that day giving themselves a good start to their league campaign. The team went on to play five more games in the league, unfortunately not all of which ended in a win. But the entire panel did very well in their first season to end up mid-table at the end of the league. The girls then began their championship run on Sunday 8th July against Termon: whom they had to play 3 over legs before moving through to the next round. Their championship challenge unfortunately ended at the quarter-final stage; after going down to a vastly experienced intermediate side of Milford. But with the continued support of the club; the team are looking forward to bigger and better things in their 2013 season.
U12 Football Season Summary: The U12 Footballers had a long, hard-working and successful year in 2012. Early in the season we decided to train two nights a week, Tuesday and Thursday. This was a great success as we were able to fit two years training and development into one season. We played a lot of difficult friendlies against teams that we would not normally play, for example Coleraine, Claudy, Steelstown, Dungiven, Strabane, Errigal Ciaran, Rodger Casements etc. We won our Northern Section and were unfortunately beaten in the county final by Glenties. We also participated in the U12 All-Ireland Blitz in Newry which proved a great success. We were as good as anyone in our group, and were unlucky not to progress due to conceding last minute goals. There were 35 players in the U12 squad and all trained well and were well supported by there parents, who should be proud of their efforts. Many ended the year playing for the U13 side who won the county shield.
