The dog, which was attached to the Donegal Mountain Rescue Team, was drafted in just before 6.30pm.

Other search and rescue units including the Rescue 118 helicopter from Sligo, Gardai, two Coast Guard vessels as well as staff from the friary also joined the search.

Buddy the Search dog along with his handler Pete Brown and assisted by trainee handler Garett Wilson eventually found a female on the shore rocks on steep ground.

The woman’s vital signs were checked but it is understood she had already passed away at that stage.

Foul play is not suspected.

Rescue 118 Coastguard Helicopter had a difficult time trying to drop the winch man onto the scene to remove the victim.

DMRT assisted the winch man in the extraction and the casualty was flown to Sligo hospital.

The woman was later confirmed dead in hospital.
