It was always going to be hard to SEE a vastly understrength Donegal side beating Fermanagh in the McKenna Cup at Brewster Park this evening.
But it was almost impossible to see anything as the Ernesiders eased their way to a comfortable victory over the All-Ireland champions on a scoreline of 2-15 to 2-7.
The game almost didn’t go ahead in Enniskillen and at times you wondered if it would finish because of the fog.
It’s difficult to read anything into the game as the vast majority of Jim McGuinness’ regular team were still in the arrivals area of Dublin Airport after their trip to Dubai.
Instead such names as Michael Boyle, Gary McFadden and Ross Wherrity were all given their chance to show the Donegal management team what they had to offer.
Unfortunately there will be few of his side’s individual displays which the Donegal manager will be able to take much from.
At one stage in the second half Fermanagh had stretched their lead to a jaw-dropping 12 points.
However a couple from Glenswilly’s McFadden and a goal a piece from Adrian Hanlon and Brick Molloy gave the scoreline a less embarrassing look.
Daryl Keenan got Fermanagh off to the perfect start with an early goal but Donegal kept in touch going in behind on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-4 at the interval.
Keenan added more scores for Fermanagh as did Shane Quigley as the home side turned the screw in the second half.
Donegal needed a goal but it was Fermanagh who struck the net again thanks to Thomas Corrigan.
Then came what appeared could be a Donegal comeback thanks to the goals from Dungloe man Hanlon and sub Molloy.
But the scale of the comeback proved too much for Donegal as Fermanagh, through the likes of Marty McGrath, added further points at will to give his team an eight point cushion at the final whistle.
