Donegal’s newest sportstar has revealed how big-hearted Shay Given put aside his own disappointment to make sure he enjoyed the biggest night of his career.Shay given

Lettermacaward man Carl McHugh scored a stunning goal against the Lifford man when they met in the semi-final of the League Cup.

McHugh’s team Bradford caused a huge upset against Given’s Aston Villa team by beating them 3-1.

The 19 year old has now revealed how he shook his childhood hero’s hand at the end of the game and then asked him for his jersey.

Shay just walked away and Carl wasn’t sure what to make of his reaction.

But the Lifford man later lived up to his reputation as one of the nicest players in the game.

Carl revealed: “I just shook Shay’s hand and asked him for his jersey. I didn’t want to be trying to speak to him after the game because he was obviously disappointed.

“But he was a top man. He left the shirt into our dressing room. He gave it to our kitman to pass on to me.

“I know there is still another leg to go but scoring past Shay in a League Cup semi-final is something that nobody can ever take away from me. It still feels surreal.”

The Donegal lad said he would love a chance to play in the final at Wembley but is taking nothing for granted when Bradford face Aston Villa again in two weeks time.

“I’m not even thinking about Wembley,” said McHugh.
