Abbey Vocational School’s Oliver Plunkett wins VEC Golfer of the Year
The Donegal VEC golf society rounded off another excellent year with the traditional New Year outing to Bundoran Golf Club.
Society captain Paddy Mc Daid could not have wished for a better day to round off his successful year as captain, with Bundoran resplendent in winter sunshine.
Going into the final outing of the season there were no fewer than four golfers in with a chance of winning the coveted Golfer of the Year title.
In the end it was society stalwart and Abbey Vocational School teacher Oliver Plunkett who prevailed to win the title on a fine score of 92 Golfer of the year points to claim his first VEC title. Sean Murphy, formerly of Crana College was the gallant runner up on 84 points, closely tailed by Martin Gallen of VEC head office on 82 points. Oliver’s victory was a hard earned and very well deserved one off a handicap of 6. Congratulations Oliver.
The winner on the day itself was Kevin Murphy with a superb effort of 41pts again off single figures, superb shooting. Runner-up was Gearoid O Dochartaigh with an excellent 40pts, closely followed by Paul Mc Ginley on 39pts. The remaining prizewinners were Sean Murphy 37pts, Jim Mc Glynn 34pts and Rory White 33pts.
The society then rounded off what was a very enjoyable year in the comfortable surroundings of the Great Northern Hotel with a fine meal followed by the presentation of the Golfer of the Year perpetual trophy to Oliver as well as the other prizes.
At the society’s AGM afterwards outgoing captain Paddy Mc Daid reflected on his year and thanked everyone who helped in any way to make his year so special and successful. On finishing Paddy proposed Rory White of Finn Valley College as the incoming captain for 2013.
