Donegal County Council’s fleet of 21 gritting trucks will be out in force this evening as temperatures are set to plunge to their lowest so far this winter.

Met Eireann are forecasting a numbing -6 degrees in locations across Donegal.

The council has reacted to the news by preparing their roads in advance of the widespread frost expected.

A council spokesman told Donegal Daily that roads will be treated across the county this evening and again tomorrow morning.

“Our fleet of 21 gritters will prepare the roads tonight and again tomorrow morning for people travelling to work.

“The forecast from Met Eireann is for temperatures to plunge as low as minus six so it will be severe of that happens,” he said.

The spokesman added that so far they are satisfied with how their winter weather plan has been coping with the cold snap.

“Last Friday night saw the heaviest snowfall but our system coped well with it.

“All roads were passable even though we did not expect that much snow to fall in places.

“We would ask the public to log onto our website and to follow us on social media to keep informed of all weather developments,” he said.
