Judge Kelly made his comments as he expressed his sympathy with Garda Donohoe’s wife and family at Letterkenny District Court this morning.

Detective Donohoe was gunned down by raiders as he escorted a cash van to a credit union in Dundalk on Friday evening.

Judge Kelly said “I would like to express my sympathy following the appalling and brutal murder of Garda Adrian Donohoe.

“It outlines the dangers Gardai face in doing their duty. I would like to express my sympathy to his wife and family and to all members of An Garda Siochana.”

The sentiments of Judge Kelly were echoed by Inspector Michael Harrison on behalf of the Gardai.

Senior solicitor Niall Sheridan spoke on behalf of the legal representatives in court.

He said he would like to express his sympathy to Garda Donohoe’s family and to An Garda Siochana for this “wanton and dreadful act.”

The murdered Garda was a former colleague of Ballyshannon Garda Superintendent Leo McGinn who was previously based in Dundalk.
