HANDBALL

On Friday 8th February Cormac Muldoone made the trip to St. Mellan’s in Monaghan where he met Down’s Shane Milligan in the U17 Ulster Quarter Final. Muldoone had been in top form in recent weeks, putting in endless hours of training to sharpen up for the occasion. It was evident from the start that his hard work had paid off as Down had no answer for Muldoone’s strength and skill.Following their success in Beragh, Sean Mac Cumhaill players rounded up again on Saturday 9th February to travel to Gort na Mona in Belfast which saw all the underage talent in Ulster compete for their chance to reach the Ulster Semi Finals.Gallagher again was first to the court in the U12 Singles where this time he faced up to Cavan. Now into the quarter final stages, Gallagher would undoubtedly be facing up to stiffer competition. Gallagher’s trade mark serve may have met its match against the young Cavan man, which meant that Gallagher had to step it up a gear and hold rallies to take each point. In the first game, Gallagher did just that winning the first game 15 – 10. The second game however saw a different game emerge as the young Cavan man served relentlessly to Gallagher’s off-hand. Now with the tables turned, Gallagher had to fight to get back in the game. Unfortunately, Gallagher couldn’t get back into the game and lost the second game 15 – 4. All to play for in the tie-breaker, Gallagher soon stepped it up a gear to take the final game 15 – 12. In the U14 Singles and Doubles category, these games seemed to follow suit with each match going to a tie breaker. Christopher Gallagher competed in the U14 singles division against Cavan also. Similar to his younger brother, Christopher took the first game on a score line of 15 – 12. However, it was Cavan this time that emerged the victor taking the next two games. Fintan Griffin and Jamie Bell were up next in the U14 Doubles against Monaghan. Just like the previous match the two boys saw themselves in a tie-breaker situation where they narrowly lost out 15 – 14 in the tie-breaker. Each and every player did themselves, their Club and County proud. Best of luck to Anthony Gallagher and Cormac Muldoone who will now fly the Donegal colours in the Ulster Semi-final this weekend in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan.
