THE HOOPS REPORT: HOW THE HELL DID THAT HAPPEN?

Shay and JimmyNEIL DOHERTY AT CELTIC PARK: IT WAS a night full of hope and dreams – and ended in a nightmare.

Celtic probably played their best football in Europe in years; but still lost tonight here at Parkhead.

Celtic 0, Juventus 3.

That’s sore reading for Hoops fans.

Especially the thousands of fans travelling from Ireland – hundreds from Donegal.

Jim McGuinness was here; as was Shay Given.

But there is nothing anyone can do about how the great Turin footballers came to Glasgow tonight and pick-pocketed the first leg of this last 16 Champions League match.

Three defensive errors – three shots on goal – and three goals.

At the other end, we missed all our opportunities.

Alessando Matri put the visitors ahead in the opening moments, taking advantage of poor defending.

Two late goals from Claudio Marchisio and Mirko Vucinic ensured the return leg will surely be just a formality.

Poor Efe Ambrose was at fault for two of the goals, a crash down to earth after winning the African Nations Cup with Nigeria at the weekend.

I’ll have Neil’s reaction later.

Going for a pint first. Sick.
