Willie is declared winner and is through to the final

Donegal’s Willie McLaughlin has followed the success of fellow county man Jason Quigly by boxing his way to the final of the national championships.

Illies boxer Willie will face defending men’s welterweight champion Adam Nolan next following his narrow win over Beijing 2008 John Joe Joyce.

He beat Joyce, from St Malachy’s Athy, by 16-14 in the bout of the night in Dublin

“Fair dues to Johnny it was a helluva fight,” said Willie afterwards.

“I knew I was up against it, Johnny knew he was up against it.

“It was a 50-50 fight and all credit to Johnny, he gave as good as he got. It’s a pity it wasn’t the final,” said McLaughlin.

Tickets are now on sale for the Irish Daily Star sponsored Elite 2013 National Championships finals.

The finals will take place at Dublin’s National Stadium on Friday, February 22nd.

Tickets are available from the National Stadium. Phone (01) 454 3525 or (01) 453 3371

Finals tickets can also be purchased at the Elite Championships semi-finals at the National Stadium this Friday and Saturday.
