Gardai have appealed to walkers, joggers and cyclists to wear high-visibility clothing and lights when out exercising.RUNNERS IN LAST YEAR'S 5K SERIES

The plea comes after a number of near misses in towns across the county including Letterkenny, Donegal Town and Buncrana following the spell of bright weather.

A Garda spokesman said hat people are being caught out after deciding to go out in the evening time to get some exercise.

“We are enjoying a spell of good, clear weather at present and there is a stretch in the evening times.

“It’s great that so many people are out on our roads exercising be that on bikes, or walking or jogging.

“But the problem is that people are being caught short by not wearing reflective clothing or taking lights with them.

“Darkness is still setting in very quickly and it’s far from the summer just yet.

“We would appeal to people to think about this when they decide to exercise and not get caught out,” he said.

* Reflective vests can be got from the Road Safety Authority for FREE by emailing them at www.rsa.ie.
