SHOPOWNER’S FAMILY THOUGHT HE HAD WON LOTTO!

The owner of a supermarket which sold Ireland’s latest millionaire lotto winning ticket has revealed how his family thought he had won the jackpot.lotto

Mystery still surrounds the identity of the winner of last weekend’s €5M jackpot which was won at Doherty’s Costcutter supermarket in Ballybofey.

The €4 ticket, doing the owner’s own numbers, scooped a cool, €5,146,800 on Saturday evening.

Shopowner Michael Doherty said his family thought he had scooped the cash windfall.

“I told my family that we, as in the shop, had won the lotto.

“But my daughter thought we had actually won the cash prize and was already planning a trip to Disneyland.

“I only wish I had won it but I am delighted for whoever has,” he said.

There is also speculation that the winner could be from Northern Ireland as the winning supermarket is next door to well-known department store, McElhinney’s, which does a lot of cross-border trade.

Mr Doherty, who gets a cash bonus for selling the winning ticket, said he honestly doesn’t know who owns the ticket.

“We will receive a bonus from the lotto. It certainly won’t be a life-changing amount of money but it will go towards paying the staff their ages this week.

“I hope whoever wins it spends it wisely and it brings them all the happiness in the world,” he said.
