CELEBRATIONS IN THE ROSSES AS JAMES McCARTHY HELPS WIGAN TO FA CUP FINAL WIN

THERE are celebrations in west Donegal this evening as one of the area’s most famous sons (or grandsons!) helped Wigan upset the odds to win the FA Cup at Wembley.

James McCarthy ran the midfield for the relegation-threatened Lancashire club who were 9/1 to beat Man City in the showpiece final.

But a Ben Watson goal just before the end – from a Shaun Maloney corner – gave Wigan Athletic the victory.

Glasgow-born James, who plays for Ireland, is the grandson of Paddy Coyle from The Rosses.

But he won’t have too much time to celebrate – McCarthy’s side need a win against Arsenal on Tuesday in their battle to stay in the Premiership

“This is unbelievable! This is some achievement for everyone at this club. We will enjoy tonight then re-focus for Tuesday,” said James after the final whistle.

“What a group of boys we’ve got. This is a massive week for the club. We have to put on a show for the last two games of the season, Roberto Martinez has been different class. he plays the way everyone wants to play and he’s magnificent.”

We understand a few bookmakers in the county will be crying into their hot chocolate tonight – with one punter in Annagry (with McCarthy connections) having €250 on Wigan to win….netting €2,250.
