DONEGAL schools athletes did their county proud in the Ulster Track & Field Finals at the weekend.
The Ulster Secondary Schools Track and Field finals, held at the Antrim Forum in glorious conditions on Friday evening and in incessant rain on Saturday had a number of outstanding Donegal individual and team performances. Described, as the most competitive and largest underage event of the year – over 500 young athletes from every county in the province – all qualified via five regional finals in early May –participated to gain top three positions, score points for overall schools awards and to represent Ulster in the All Ireland schools in Tullamore on Saturday 1st June.
Abbey Voc. School, Donegal Town, won the Intermediate U17 Girls Cup with a total of 68pts ahead of Belfast Grammar schools Strathern, Glenlola Collegiate and Ballyclare High School. They had numerous fine individual performances e.g. Kelly McGrory, 1st 300m Hurdles and 2ND 100m, Kate McGowan, 1st 80m Hurdles and 2nd Long Jump, Katie Hoad 2nd Pole Vault, Ciara Crawford 2nd and Jessica Quinn 3rd in the 2k walk and Emma Brady 4th in the Triple Jump but the overall award was decided on the final event of the day -the 4 x 10m relay. The Abbey quartet of Emma Brady, Kate McGowan, Ruth Gillespie and Kelly Mc Grory qualified for the final via a second place semi-final performance early on Saturday. As the final entered the home and final straight Kelly Mc Grory took the baton 2metres down on the leader. She closed down the gap and at the line in a time of 50.7secs brought her team to victory – 0.3secs separated the top three schools.
Individual performances
John Kelly, Royal & Prior, threw 16.12m for a new record in the Senior Boys shot. John, is the top throws prospect to emerge in the region in some time has recently qualified for the World Youth C/chips. St Catherine’s, Killybegs, athlete Daniel Gallagher had a fine double win in the Inter U17 Boys 3k on Friday night where he ran away from the field in the final lap and on Sat afternoon when impressively winning the demanding 1,500m S/C. Arlene Crossan, Loreto Letterkenny was another to impress when achieving an unusual winning double in the Long Jump and 800m Junior U15 Girls
