Inishowen Sinn Féin councillor Jack Murray has said that he believes that a footbridge will be built in Cockhill.
Cllr Murray made the comments after his motion was passed at full council calling for the council to pursue funding for a footbridge to be built at the existing bridge and for the €60,000 available through development charges at the bridge to be ring-fenced for a footbridge.
Cllr Murray said the new Cockhill Bridge will be a vital piece of infrastructure in Inishowen and will open up the north of the peninsula, ease traffic congestion and increase road safety in Buncrana.
“However, to date, no funding source has been identified for the almost €3million required to build a new bridge.
“The bridge is, and will remain to be, the most important infrastructural project in Donegal; but while continuing to prioritise the new bridge project, we have a duty to ensure the safety of those who use the existing bridge.
“The existing bridge is not safe for pedestrians. It is a hazard for the hundreds of families who live across the Crana from the school, the chapel, shops and many other local amenities.
“It is for that reason that I moved this motion and asked for the available money to be ring-fenced for a footbridge.
“It will take years before the new bridge is built in Cockhill. I am concerned that someone could be knocked down tomorrow on the existing bridge. We need to act immediately to address the ongoing safety concerns in Cockhill.”
