MORE THAN 500 PUPILS COMPETE IN SMALL SCHOOLS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Athletics for Small Schools County Finals 2013 were held at the Danny McDaid track in Letterkenny on Friday.

This is the 10th year for the championships which are becoming more and more popular with the smaller schools in the county. Children are given the opportunity to compete on a level playing field with other pupils from similar sized schools.

Thanks to the generous help from Donegal Sports Partnership Cumann na mBunscol can make these championships completely free to all participants, unlike other commercially based athletic events for primary school children in the county.

This year 558 children from small schools (1 – 4 teacher schools) all over the county participated.

Schools which took part this year for the first time were Roshine NS, Rosses, SN an tSraithe Móire, Glendowan, and Acres NS, Burtonport.

There were some memorable performances from the young athletes and great fun and enjoyment was experienced by all involved.

Pupils that came to the fore were: Tommy Mac an Ultaigh, Scoil an Choimín; Kelly Anderson, Drumoghill NS; Mia Baikí, Acres NS; Karen Gallagher, Cashel, Fanad; Saoirse Bonner, Keadue NS; Evan Duddy, Srath Mór; and Dean Harkin, Tiernasligo, Urris.

The overall county championships for 1 and 2 teacher schools was won by Keadue NS, Rosses who have now won two-in-a-row. St Joseph’s Rathdonnell was a close second.

In the 3 and 4 teacher division Frosses NS was victorious but they were pushed all the way by Scoil Eoin Baiste, Carrigart, Drumoghill NS and Scoil an Choimín, Gleann Fhinne.

Cumann na mBunscol is indebted to the many teachers who brought their pupils along to the event, which for many was their first experience of Track and Field athletics. Indeed over the last 10 years many successful county athletes began their athletic careers at these championships.

A special word of thanks to all parents, teachers, young adults and Rosses AC club members who worked tirelessly once again to make these championships the success that they are today.

We also appreciate the generosity of both Letterkenny AC and Lifford AC in allowing us to use its equipment. Cumann na mBunscol is now planning ahead to widen these championships to cater for larger size schools as many teachers in the larger schools as dissatisfied with how schools athletics is at the moment.
