A survey of what holidaymakers really think of Donegal and the North West has been published by Failte Ireland.

Sliabh League is among the reasons why tourists visit Donegal.

Sliabh League is among the reasons why tourists visit Donegal.

More than 1,000 holidaymakers were interviewed for the survey revealing the reasons why tourists come to Donegal in the first place.

Martina Bromley, Head of Operations for Fáilte Ireland in the North West stressed the importance of research like this for developing Ireland’s tourism sector.

“If we want to continue to attract more overseas visitors to the North West, we need to know more about what they think, what they like and what they want.

“Tourism is in a good place compared to five years ago but we can’t become complacent. In order to draw more visitors to our shores we need to ensure we are providing the right type of holiday experiences – particularly for our overseas markets. In that respect, research like this is a valuable help to all of us in the sector as we continue to develop and improve Ireland’s tourism offering.”

The survey throws up many insights for the North West which many may not have expected.

The top three reasons for choosing the North West as a destination were its beautiful scenery; history/culture and visiting family/friends.

While in the North West they visited Historic Houses/Castles; Interpretative Centres; Museums/Gallery, Gardens and national parks.

Hotels were the most popular choice of accommodation at 48%, while 16% stayed in B&Bs.

A total of 48% of visitors choose to eat in hotels while 44% dined in a restaurant;

Hiking/Walking is the most popular activity for visitors to the North West.

Welcoming the results, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring said  “This is really useful research which sheds light on why people come to Ireland. It will help us to tailor our product for visitors even more accurately in the future.”
