UPDATED: Gardaí are investigating an incident in which a man was killed outside Bundoran this morning in what is believed to have been a hit and run incident.
The body of a man in his late 40’s was discovered shortly after 5am this morning on the Newtown Road just over a kilometre from the seaside town.
Gardaí say the man appears to have been struck by a vehicle which did not remain at the scene close to Bundoran cemetery.
There is huge shock locally following the incident.
The man has not yet been named until all his relatives are informed of the tragic death. He’s believed to have been originally from the UK.
It is understood the man was walking to his home in Co Leitrim from Bundoran.
A post mortem examination will be carried out later today.
The body remains at the scene and it is expected that it will be removed to Sligo General Hospital, where a post mortem examination will be carried out later today. The road is closed and Garda forensic collision investigators are in the process of carrying out an examination of the area.
Gardaí are asking anyone who travelled on the Newtown Road near Bundoran last night or in the early hours of this morning to contact them at Ballyshannon Garda Station on 071 9858530.
