Team News

After the excitement of Presidents Day activities it was back to basics and no where better to start than with team events. First out last week was John Fitzgerald’s minor league team who travelled to Buncrana for the first leg of the Donegal minor league final.

The Portsalon team put in a magnificent performance and left the Innishowen capital with three matches to Buncrana’s two matches. The return leg is scheduled for 15th September.

In the Donegal Senior Scratch League Portsalon under the direction of Andy Boland entertained Ballyliffen in the return leg of semi-final match.

The Portsalon team having obtained four matches to Ballyliffen’s three matches in the first leg still had it all to do. The battling Balyliffen men battled back having been behind in the early stages recorded wins on the opening two matches with wins against D P Logue and Simon Stephens, before Portsalon got off the mark. Wins by Pascal Cullen, Connor Connoly, Stephen Connoly and Paul Shields. The final match saw John Shields all square after seventeen and the match was called in and the Portsalon team advance to their first Senior Scratch League final.

The final will be contested between Portsalon and our neighbours Rosapenna. In the Donegal League Noel Mc Cormick’s quest for glory ended as he led his team out in the return leg of the semi-final match at Ballybofey. From the first leg at Portsalon the Ballybofey men left with two matches and the return was always going to be difficult. Added to the difficulty was the scheduling of the senior match on the same day left team captain Noel with a few selection problems.

With Cathal Canning and Eamon Mc Conigley winning their match and Shaun Shields and Tony Kingston one up with two to play the match was called in and Ballybofey advance to the final having won on holes up The club captain Joe Harkin thanked the team captain Noel Mc Cormick and all who represented Portsalon golf club during this season’s campaign.
