DD LOCAL – RAPHOE HOSTS CROSS BORDER INITIATIVE ON DISABILITY

RAPHOE NOTES raphoe centre

Cross-border Forum on Disabilities Presentation

In February 2013 Raphoe Family Resource Centre received funding from the Reconciliation through the Riverine, a joint initiative between Donegal Co. Council and Strabane District Council with strong support from the local community through the Riverine Forum.

The funding was to establish a cross-border forum on disability, which aimed to develop cross-community, cross-border relationships between people with disabilities in the Strabane and Lifford areas. With the help of disability organisations such as Rehabcare, Lifford and Glenside Adult Training Centre, Strabane 17 people with intellectual and physical disabilities were recruited. The participants took part in 28 facilitated sessions to enhance their understanding of traditions and cultures; increase levels of tolerance and acceptance; decrease levels of isolation, alienation and social exclusion, and to enable people with disabilities in becoming more ‘visible’ in daily lives of communities.

On Friday 27th September, the final day of the project, the participants were presented with certificates by Mr. Eamonn Browne, Project Coordinator, Reconciliation through the Riverine to mark their involvement in the Cross-border Forum on Disabilities.

The overall aim of the Reconciliation through the Riverine is to address the impact of the ‘conflict’ on the Strabane/Lifford area and its hinterlands by regenerating the border riverside area so as to create an iconic shared space as a lasting legacy of the Peace Process and consolidating the work undertaken in the last 15 years in terms of peace building and reconciliation.

The Reconciliation through the Riverine is funded by the International Fund for Ireland (IFI). Since it was established by the Irish and British Governments in 1986, the IFI has worked to underpin efforts towards peace in Northern Ireland. Progress is due in no small part to consistent international encouragement and generous political and practical support for peace in the island of Ireland. The International Fund has been the principal channel for this support, notably from the United States, the European Union, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

“This project is supported by the Reconciliation through the Riverine Project managed by Donegal County Council and funded by the International Fund for Ireland”.
