A brilliant Naomh Conaill performance saw the Glenties men cause a shock to win the under 16s Division 1 county league title against a very strong St Eunan’s team.
A huge blow to the Letterkenny men in the first few minutes of the game as full forward Rory Carr suffered an injury after a heavy challenge with the Naomh Conaill keeper Tony Byrne and had to be replaced.
Nothing between the the 2 sides as they went into the break all level 1-4 to Eunans to Naomh Conaills 0-7.
It was set up for an exciting second half with the game played in perfect conditions in Glenfin.
Naomh Conaill started the second half quickly scoring 3 points without reply with Matice McKelvey & Ethan O’Donnell dominating the midfield exchanges.
Eunans danger man Niall O’Donnell a constant threat in the first half started again to look dangerous causing problems for the NC defence. The Letterkenny men chipped away at Naomh Conaills lead and again it was level with time running.
Eunans now had all the momentum but could not convert any of their scoring opportunitys and it was the Glenties men who charged up the field to score a fine point and take the lead again.
With only seconds to go Niall O’Donnell had a chance to take it into extra time with a free from 30 yards but a tight angle but he couldn’t convert it so it all went down to whatever time the referee had to add on. He played near 5 minutes but the Glenties men held on for a famous win.
Great credit has to go to both clubs on a game that was played in a very sporting fashion and a very high level of football.
