The members of a winter Alliance are no respecters of weather forecasts and while the weather forecasters were predicting gale force winds and torrential rain for the day the hardy men from the North West turned up in numbers in Nairn and Portnoo for their annual visit to this links course.

Well it did rain in biblical proportions and the wind did blow at storm force but the members did not give way ,They donned their best rain suits so that the y would not be denied their day of sport and went on to play their 18 holes .

Witness the Gross score of 1 under 72 from Brian McElhinney He was one under after 9 having had 2 birdies ,He gave back a stroke at the par 3 7th .At this stage he was being hotly pursued by Finnian O’Doherty who had dropped a stroke at the first. Finnian had two poor drives at 12 and 13 to put him out of the running for top honours although from the 13 th on he parred and had a birdie although he dropped a further stroke at the 18th .The person who took the runner up place was Kevin Quigg who had dropped 3 strokes in the first 4 holes and a 4th at the 9th to be out in 39 he had 2 further birdies and a dropped shot to finish 3 over in third place was Alliance captain Michael McGeady who had a very uncharacteristic round that included two double bogies on the first nine interspersed with birdies ,pars and bogies ,He edged out on the break of tie Noel Callan who had an excellent birdie on the last which was warmly applauded by those in the shelter of the club house.

In the Nett section the winner was Clive Davison from Portsalon Golf Club who has steadily been reducing his handicap .The runner up for the second competition in a row was Strabane Golf club’s Eddie McHugh. The leader after 9 was Oscar Mailey on 19 points In joint second place was Eddie McHugh with Barry Ramsay from Letterkenny Golf club on 18 points they were followed by Stephen McKeegan of the City of Derry Club and Clive on 16 points. However as the saying goes “when the going gets tough the tough get going “Oscar continued to gather points but indifferent play on 14 and 15 saw him drop back to 4th .While Barry saw his challenge fall away in an especially fierce down pour accompanied by gale force gusts of wind. Clive meanwhile had taken the lead on 10 with a par d he held on to this advantage to finish the back nine with 20 points Eddie having fallen back with a blank at the same hole and finished with 18 points just holding off Stephen who had 19 points.

In the Gross Golfer of the Year Brian McElhinney has retaken the lead with 34 while Michael McGeady is now on 33 and Finnian O’Doherty is on 28

In the Nett section Eddie McHugh has 17, Ballyliffin Golf Club’s Brian Wallace is on 14 and club mates from North West Golf Club Terry Meenan and Michael Bradley are sharing third place.

Next competition Rosapenna (Old Tom Morris) G.C. 16TH November 2013
