A major emergency plan was launched off the coast of West Donegal today after a boat was spotted drifting.

The small boat was spotted by a member of the public floating in waters between Dungloe and Burtonport.

Nobody was on board the boat and there was concern that someone had fallen overboard.

The rescue 118 chopper was on route to a training exercise and was diverted to investigate – local coast guard services also responded.

However after a time circling the area nobody was spotted anywhere near the area despite extensive searches.

A spokesman at Malin Head coastguard confirmed a short time ago that they are happy that no one is missing.
